Birnie help launch front-of-pack environmental scores

Birnie Consultancy have been working with Foundation Earth, a non profit organisation launching front-of-pack environmental scores the autumn.

The brainchild or Denis Lynn, the Northern Irish food entrepreneur who died in may following a freak quadbike accident Foundation Earth have brought together the world’s two leading systems for measuring the environmental impact of an individual food product using Life Cycle Analysis.

Global food giants and a group of the UK’s leading supermarkets have teamed up with the world’s top food and environmental scientists to make this possible. The first scores will begin appearing this September on the packaging of some well known products, such as Finnebrogue’s Naked brand of bacon.

Speaking before the launch, Birnie Consultancy’s Managing Director Dr. Jonathan Birnie said:

“To be asked to be a part of the launch of this innovative project is a real feather in the cap of Birnie Consultancy, which the team here at Birnie Consultancy have been proud to work on.

“We believe front-of-pack environmental scoring will change the way we buy food for the better, and look forward to seeing the first scores on food packaging in September..”
